Tofu as a Healthy Alternative to Meat

There has been a strong resurgence in our society for the need to eat healthier. Unfortunately, our taste buds still crave a nice, thick, juicy slab of meat. But there is an easy way you can trick your taste buds into thinking you are eating that juicy meat when in fact, what you are actually consuming is much healthier.

Tofu -- it's a healthy alternative to many fatty meats. Tofu is soybean curd made from soybean milk. Tofu has the same softness and consistency of cheese. By itself, tofu is flavorless. Tofu has sponge-like qualities; it easily absorbs any flavor.

Tofu is popular in Oriental cooking. It is not a new food. Tofu has been around as early as 200BC. Tofu was discovered in China, quite by accident. Today, tofu is a popular dietary substitute throughout most of Asia. Tofu is made fresh daily in many Asian tofu delis. Tofu has been made popular in America only recently. As a healthy alternative to fatty meats, tofu is great for people who are want or need to remove or significantly reduce fats and cholesterol from their diet. And because tofu can easily absorb any flavor, people will still be able to enjoy the taste of their high fat foods.

Tofu can be bought fresh or packaged. Fresh tofu is typically packed in a container filled with water. Fresh tofu is good for about a week. Packaged tofu, on the other hand, has a long shelf life and doesn't need to be refrigerated, but simply stored in a cool place. Tofu can either be soft, firm or extra-firm. Soft tofu is best for whipping and blending and best used for oriental soups. Form tofu is dense and is best used for slicing and cubing. Extra-firm tofu is great on the grill or for stir-fried dishes

Tofu is very versatile. You can use it in a variety of dishes, from sweets to meats. Tofu adapts whatever flavor it is prepared with. If you use the proper spices and flavoring, tofu will be indistinguishable from your favorite, high-fat dish. Tofu's sponge-like quality makes it a versatile health food that can afford you limitless possibilities in the kitchen.
